What are porcelain veneers?

Veneers are used as a dental option to correct color and shape problems in teeth. They give you a brighter, whiter smile and can also adjust minor problems such as gaps, chips, or cracks. Some of these problems are the result of:

  • Aging
  • Genetics
  • Staining or discoloration
  • Excessive tobacco use
  • Chemical damage from medications
Veneers use a thin, but durable, layer of porcelain material to cover the teeth. Even though the material is thin, it’s strong enough to last for many years if properly cared for. Porcelain veneers are used to:

  • Improve tooth shape
  • Whiten teeth
  • Hide stains and discoloration
  • Correct the gaps between teeth

Sometimes, for a beautiful smile, the size of teeth and their relation to each other and the gums play a significant role in esthetic smile design. There are times that special gum surgeries may be required for optimal results. Some of these surgical adjustments can be done by laser and some with more conventional techniques. There may also be times when full crown coverage may work better than veneers for you. Our Annandale family dentist can make assessments and help you decide on a treatment that best works for you.

How are veneers different from whitening?

Teeth whitening is used to provide a whiter, brighter smile for teeth that have a minor degree of discoloration to them. If stains are a lot deeper within the enamel, veneers can be a comparable option. Porcelain veneers also change the shape of teeth and enhance your appearance.

What is the procedure for veneers like?

The teeth are examined to ensure no pre-existing conditions are evident. This is also the time when the type of veneer options available to you will be discussed. The color of your teeth is also taken into consideration and the veneers will be made to match the color as close as possible to provide an optimal natural or desired look. At the end of the exam, a cosmetic treatment will be created specifically for you. An impression of your teeth is taken and a mold is created from the impression. This mold is used as a temporary until your permanent veneers are complete. The temporary veneer/crowns will need to be worn until the permanent veneer is prepared and adjustments are made. Before the permanent veneer is placed, the teeth will be cleaned and the veneer is fixed onto the tooth with dental cement. After veneer treatment, the patient usually needs a few weeks to adjust.
